Poorly-trained dogs owned by irresponsible people have fostered significant public anti-dog sentiment. With a healthy dash of common sense and courtesy, however, dogs and their owners can and do live peacefully in the community.

A well-mannered canine companion that is under control at all times is welcome in most neighbourhoods.

When you get a dog, you also accept legal responsibility for it. All municipalities have bylaws about animals. Most deal with how many dogs and even which breeds you may own, annual licensing regulations, vaccination, spaying or neutering, noise and public leash laws. Check whether your municipality or insurance carrier has restrictions on how many dogs you own or on
the breed you choose.

Keep nuisance barking to a minimum. Never permit their pets to be off their property unattended. ‘Stoop and scoop’ in their yards daily and while out for walks. Make sure their dogs are trained to be obedient in public areas.
