healthy VITALITY

DENTAL CARE
Good dental health is the result of the three Ds: dentistry, daily brushing and diet. Using a dry kibble can help scrub plaque from the teeth.
Starting in the puppy years, teach your dog to accept brushings. You can begin by rubbing your dogs teeth with a piece of gauze dipped in bouillion. From there, move to dog toothpaste on your finger, and then eventually to a pet toothbrush. Never use human toothpaste.
EXERCISE EVERY DAY
Active dogs tend to live longer, have more energy and socialize better with other dogs and people.
Your dog should get 30 to 60 minutes of exercise each day. This daily exercise keeps the heart in great shape and helps to prevent other diseases of the brain, liver, lungs and kidneys.
Exercise also keeps bones strong. Unused bones can become weak. Bones need a little bit of stress in order to grow properly.
Be sure that exercise is appropriate for your dog. Working and herding breeds may need more activity than other breeds. Older dogs should partake in lowkey exercise. Swimming is good for dogs with arthritis.
PROPER DIET
Choose a diet that works for your dog. Consider your dog’s age, weight and medical issues.
A food with adequate protein is a must, as protein is the building block of muscle. This is particularly important for older dogs. Along with protein, your dog’s food should contain fibre.
Antioxidants play a key role in limiting damage to the body’s cells. Plants and vegtables can provide vitamins C and E, lutein and beta-carotene. Try to provide a diet rich in antioxidants.
VACCINATIONS
Protect your dog against rabies, parvovirus, kennel cough, distemper and other diseases. Keep all vaccinations up to date.
SAFETY FIRST
Create a safe environment in your home. This means keeping unfriendly items out of reach (electrical cords, small toys, poisonous plants).
Consider crate training your dog. He will be safe in his crate when you aren’t home, and your home will be protected from destruction!
GROOMING
A shiny coat is a good indication of your dog’s health. A nutritious diet including omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids will help keep your pup’s coat in top condition. Make time for brushing at least once a week. Dogs that shed heavily should be brushed more often.
While bathing is sometimes necessary, overbathing can be harmful. Too many baths and too much shampoo can dry out the coat by stripping it of its natural oils. If you do have to bathe your dog often, try a moisturizing shampoo.
